2nd Daikin Award

On June 15, 2016, the evaluation committee assigned the 2nd Daikin award promoted by Daikin Applied Europe S.p.A. and the Department of Biology and Biotechnology '' Charles Darwin '' Sapienza University Rome, for young researchers in biodiversity conservation.

14 applications received from 10 Italian universities. The award went to Dr. Luca Santini for his outstanding doctoral thesis and for his scientific contribution in the field of biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Luca Santini was born 10 July 1985 in Ancona, he got a Master in Natural Science in 2010, and obtained his PhD in 2015 with a thesis on the application of dispersal distance estimates in large-scale conservation analyses. His research is primarily focused on macroecology and conservation biology, specifically on the use of inter-specific relationships among biological traits to inform conservation studies, and on the anthropogenic-induced alteration of macroecological patterns.

He also researched protected areas effectiveness, habitat connectivity, diversity metrics for biodiversity monitoring, and secondarily the behavioural ecology and evolution of primates. He is author of 20 scientific papers, 1 book chapter and 3 technical reports.

The award was presented in Ponzano Romano in the ‘St. Andrea in Fulmine’ abbey during the annual conference of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology - University of Rome "La Sapienza" from Eng. Iwasaki Keiji (Chief Engineer - Applied Daikin Europe S.p.A.) and Prof. Stefano Biagioni (Department of Biology and Biotechnology - University of Rome "La Sapienza").

Special thanks to Mr. Luca Paolella, Vice President of Applied Daikin Europe S.p.A. and Prof. Stefano Biagioni, Director of the Department BBCD for making this initiative possible. We also thank the members of the award evaluation committee Prof. Marco Oliverio, Prof. Paolo Ciucci, Prof. Fabio Attorre, Eng. Luca Del Ferraro, Dr. Moreno Di Marco and Cinzia Mondazzi, organizers on behalf of Daikin Applied Europe S.p.A..

Daikin Award promoted by Daikin Applied Europe S.p.A.

On June 9, 2015, the evaluation committee assigned the Daikin award promoted by Daikin Applied Europe S.p.A. and the Department of Biology and Biotechnology '' Charles Darwin '' Sapienza University Rome, for young researchers in biodiversity conservation.

18 applications received from 14 Italian universities. The award went to Dr. Emiliano Mori for his outstanding doctoral thesis and for his scientific contribution in the field of biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Emiliano Mori was born 20 December 1985 in Siena, he obtained in 2009 the degree in Biodiversity and Evolution at the University of Pisa with a dissertation on the genetic structure and phylogeography of 'Francolino Nero', with highest honours. In 2013 he also discussed the Ph.D. dissertation on ‘Spatial behaviour of the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata in contrasting ecological context’.

During the dissertation, matures a strong interest for conservation biology, particularly the problems connected with the introduced species.

The award was presented in Ponzano Romano in the ‘St. Andrea in Fulmine’ abbey during the annual conference of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology - University of Rome "La Sapienza" from Eng. Luigi Sorabella (Chief Engineer - Applied Daikin Europe S.p.A.) and Prof. Stephen Biagioni (Department of Biology and Biotechnology - University of Rome "La Sapienza").
