Rooms temperature, energy consumption, carbon emissions, and operative costs – for all for all these aspects the HVAC system in the building has a central role. And the bigger the building, the bigger and complex will probably be the HVAC system, requiring a plant management effort proportionate to the size of the system.
Of course, this is the context where system control solutions are mostly appreciated.
Controls, not only help tracking chillers operations so service engineers can make sure machines are working as they were designed; they also help controlling the way every single chiller in a plant operates. Controls allow chillers to reach their goals with minimum effort, both in terms of energy consumption and mechanically.
All this translates into chillers’ increased durability and efficiency, then generating operating and maintenance cost savings.
To do that, Daikin has developed its proprietary system control solution – The iCM©.
The iCM© (Intelligent Chiller Manager) aims at optimizing the performance of groups of chillers, controlling the way every single one of them operates in the plant. This allows the system to reach goals with minimum effort, both in terms of energy consumption and mechanically. All this translates into chillers’ increased durability and efficiency, then generating operating and maintenance cost savings. Daikin iCM© can also connect to the Daikin cloud monitoring platform Daikin on Site (DoS), and can communicate with the most popular building management systems (BMS), ensuring perfect building management integration.
The iCM© is responsible for the optimal sequencing and staging of Chillers, Heat Pumps and Multipurpose units in a Plant, and in the new version with the Microtech® 4 controller, has evolved in a comprehensive and very flexible control solution.
The iCM© now allows to manage mixed plant configurations in both, Heating and Cooling modes also integrating several other functionalities besides unit control and units sequencing and staging:
- Heat recovery management
- Free cooling management
- Plant demand & Current limit
- Energy & performance monitoring
- Setpoint reset
- Rapid restart
These are the key functionalities that have made the iCM system control solution a modern and valuable one for Daikin customers in the Applied segment.
Similarly to other Daikin products, the iCM© is constantly subject to improvement. One of the latest, which makes the Daikin control solution even more modern and relevant for customers’ HVAC projects, is the possibility to connect the iCM© to a secondary circuit management system.
The iSM© (Intelligent Secondary Manager), is a proprietary control solution recently launched by Daikin – a control panel managing secondary water circuit devices such as Pumps, Bypass Valve, Sensors, and Energy Meters in a building water distribution system.
This solution is particularly useful in projects where water needs to be distributed in big size buildings through a secondary circuit.
It can either be implemented as a standalone solution or can be connected (up to 3 iSM© can be connected) to a Daikin communication network to communicate with the iCM© and share information about secondary circuit management to further optimize the chiller plant operations. Besides that, it can also be integrated to a BMS.
With the iSM© the Plant control solution provided by Daikin is extended to secondary Loop as well, allowing the iCM© to manage a whole plant with no need of third party BMS integration.
Of course, this results in simplified management of the plant, as the users have all they need in one infrastructure completely designed by one manufacturer, where all the parts effectively communicate to each other, and issues can be easily identified and addressed by the supplier.
